Bike Phone Mounts

When I am bike commuting, I like to have my smart phone visible so that I can use during my commute. This may be for a sat-nav system, with Google Maps, if I am taking a different route, to see my riding data using the Cyclemeter app or just to make sure I don’t miss important notifications, that I could choose to stop and deal with.

Having tried many different phone holder systems for bike commuting, from really cheap eBay specials to more expensive systems, I was never quite satisfied with the result. They never quite secured properly and ended up slipping when I went over un-even terrain, they covered the phone screen so I had to remove it to use it or I didn’t feel like they held the expensive smart phone, and I worried it would drop and be damaged.

That is until I found the Quad Lock system. Quad Lock claim these systems to be ‘the lightest, strongest and most secure smartphone bike mount on the market’. I completely agree.

With the Quad Lock system, you buy a universal case for your phone which incorporates the Quad Lock system. These are sleek and do not make the phone feel at all bulky. They help to protect the phone in normal day to day life whilst enabling connection to any Quad Lock mount system and make mounting quick and easy, yet perfectly secure.

Whilst this system is not the cheapest, you get a completely quality product that will last and, more importantly, hold your device secure over any bike commuter route.

I have the iPhone case to match my device, but these cases come for all smart phone makes and models.

You can get your case from Amazon using the links below.

Once you have your case, you will need a bike holder. I actually own two of the Quad Lock bike holders. I have the stem mount holder that I use on my road bike and I have the ‘out-front’ holder which I use on my mountain bike.

The stem mount will fit any straight bar, such as the stem of your drop handlebars or the crossbar of straight handlebars. They are attached with elasticated bands that stretch around the bar. There is a rubber mount to protect your metalwork paint from any damage and to provide friction so that the mount will not move.

I have found that on my road bike the stem mount is sufficiently secure when the surface is smooth. Riding over rougher terrain can cause the mount to slip over time but should serve you fine for normal road bike commuting.

The out front mount, is a more secure system with a cap screw used to physically tighten the mount around the handlebar. The use of an Allen key for tightening means a more secure friction grip can be obtained which means this will stay put one more rough and rugged terrain. I have used this with my mountain bike on tough terrain commutes and had no issues with it slipping, even with a heavy iPhone mounted to it.
